2022 Scholarship Winner — Kevin Kornau
In alignment with Corey’s character and community impact, and made possible by the generous contributions of family, friends, and members of the local community, the sixth annual Hoody Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Lakota East Senior, Kevin Kornau.
Kevin, son of Tracy and Joe Kornau, is an accomplished, multi-sport student athlete. In addition to being a four year starter and captain of the varsity wrestling team, Kevin demonstrated his versatility on the football field by playing both offense and defense during his senior campaign. He has been described as someone who is “incredibly creative, helpful, fun-loving and goal oriented” and “has a deep love and commitment to his friends and would go to bat for them regardless of the situation”. Kevin credits his parents and older brother for pushing him to be a good teammate who refuses to back down in the face of adversity and always follows through on his commitments.
This fall, Kevin will be attending the University of Kentucky where he will major in Nursing. After college, he plans to work at a VA hospital as a psychiatric nurse helping to support veterans suffering from PTSD. Upon review of his application, the scholarship committee truly appreciated Kevin’s candid and confident approach to saying what was on his mind while also demonstrating a genuine appreciation for his family, teammates, community and country.
In his own words….
“I am honored to receive the Hoody Memorial Scholarship. Although we were different positions and pounds apart in weight classes in wrestling, from all the stories that I had heard so far we would have been great friends. I would like to think that. I like to have fun and we both share the qualities of grit and determination.”
